2010 Philmont Adventure

On 137,000 rugged acres in New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Philmont offers rock climbing, survival, horseback riding, mountain biking, archaeology, gold panning, 30.06 rifle shooting, trout fishing, interpretive programs such as homesteading and buckskinning, and backpacking along miles of scenic trails to campsites in remote valleys and skyhigh meadows. Since Philmont's first camping season in 1939, more than 650,000 Scouts, Venturers and their leaders have participated in the rugged challenge of its backpacking program. Crews hike Philmont's mountains for twelve days, spending nights at various backcountry camps. Philmont, and all it's programs, is dedicated to perpetuating the aims of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Great Rivers Council contingent to Philmont will leave LaPlata, Mo on Sunday, July 18, 2010 and return Sunday, August 1. The total cost for a contingent member will not exceed $1000.00. Youth and adults from all Scouting programs within the council are encouraged to apply for this experience. Hiking the backcountry at Philmont is an experience that will be cherished forever.

Applications for the adult contingent leadership positions are currently being accepted. Each of the four treks will have an adult advisor. There will also be an overall adult contingent advisor. 28 youth and 8 adult positions exist and fill fast. All participants require the approval of their unit leader as well as that of the contingent leader. Scout participants require parental approval. Scouts must be 14 years old as of January 1, 2010. A $100 non-refundable non-transferable deposit per person is required. Registrations will not be accepted without a participant's name and parent's permission.

Limited amounts of financial aid are available for those Scouts wishing to attend Philmont, but are not financially able. Due to large demand, preference may be given to those who have NOT attended Philmont in the past. Application for financial aid is due November 1, 2009.
